The Matthews Park and Recreation Center solar
electric array was installed by Mario Monesterio in March 2005 with
support from Xcel Energy, the Department of Commerce, and SNG. As
a Minneapolis public park, this system was a perfect fit with the
goals of the organizers: To have a PV system that could be monitored
by a data collection and display system (Heliotronics) that would
be available to school students. Yet they have found that technological
challenges can impact their outreach. Because the Heliotronics has
a PC operating system and the adjacent school (Seward Montessori)
has only Macintoshes, they haven't yet been able to make the data
available to the neighboring students. Also, power surges have resulted
in a lot of data loss. They are working to have an uninterruptible
power supply installed by October so that they can begin to reliably
collect cumulative data.
