Several "green" features influenced
the design of the White
Bear Racquet & Swim. They have utilized the "Natural
Step" framework to undertake some of the first green innovations
at a sports and health club in Minnesota. They have replaced an
aging five-court tennis bubble with a highly-insulated, permanent
five-court metal building with super-efficient indirect lighting
and in-court radiant heat and cooling fueled by ground-source heat
pumps, saving an estimated $40,000 annually. They have also converted
their four swimming pools from a standard chlorine system to Salt
Pure saltwater pools that eliminate chlorine and create a non-caustic
swim experience. The day-lit 8,000 square feet of fitness space
has Solatubes that are connected to their lighting system so that
lights are turned off when the level of daylight is sufficient.
